Aircraft extension drill bits are stronger than drill bits that have grooves along their entire length. For drilling holes in tough, high tensile strength materials such as stainless steel, titanium and Inconel. Ideal for drilling aluminum and medium to low steel alloys. Black oxide treated HSS enhances heat resistance and extends tool life, with a thinner oxide surface treatment than the black oxide typically used to identify cobalt steel tools; performance is similar to uncoated tools. Spring-tempered shank prevents permanent bending when drilled holes are not directly aligned. Round shanks can be used with a variety of toolholder systems.
A drill with a split point of 118- or 135 degrees means that a lower force is needed to drill into the workpiece, preventing the drill from sliding on the surface of the material, self-centering and reducing the thrust needed for drilling.
